In this blog series, we aim to introduce you to our artists and give you a glimpse into their creative journeys. Today, let's meet Natasha Simonian.

Q: How did you start making art? Why do you make art?

A: As a child, one of my favorite pastimes was drawing. I would spend hours capturing the view from the balcony of our old house in Beirut, Lebanon. Little did I know that I was laying the foundation for my future involvement in art. As a teenager, I realized that art was my true passion, and I pursued it at a higher level, honing my skills. Creating art brings me immense joy and allows me to escape from everyday worries. It also helps me connect with my Armenian and Lebanese heritage, embracing my cultural roots and strengthening my sense of belonging.

Q: What inspires you? What inspired this piece/idea?

A: My main inspiration stems from my Lebanese/Armenian background. Living abroad has made me realize the significance of the intricate details within our societies. I strive to convey these nuances through my art, sometimes in a sarcastic or humorous manner. Other artists also inspire me greatly. Exploring their portfolios feels like meeting new people, as their artworks often reflect their character and personality. Additionally, traveling to different countries and visiting museums and workshops broadens my artistic perspective.

Q: What is your most important artist tool? Is there something you can’t live without in your studio?

A: Currently, I'm primarily focused on digital art. This means that as long as I have access to a computer, any sunlit room can serve as my studio.

Q: Is there an element of art you enjoy working with most? Why?

A: I find myself captivated by creating patterns, often combined with muted colors. I can't pinpoint a single reason for this preference, but there's something about geometry that perfects an artwork in my eyes.

Q: Is there an artwork you are most proud of? Why?

A: I have a deep affection for artworks that incorporate Armenian patterns, such as the "Armenian Pattern." One particular piece holds special meaning for me as it was inspired by the original needlework of my partner's grandmother (tatik!). By transforming her work into a more modern-looking artwork with vibrant colors, I pay homage to her craftsmanship. Sharing this piece with the broader Armenian community fills me with immense pride.

Q: What are your go-to methods for setting up a space that helps cultivate your workflow?

A: COFFEE, SUN, and MUSIC are essential elements of my creative process. They maintain my efficiency at a high level throughout the day. Additionally, engaging in small but motivating conversations with my partner helps me stay focused and make progress.

Q: When it comes to home decor, what does your dream room/space look like?

A: I envision my workspace as a sunlit haven, vibrant and filled with plants, books, and wall art. I love having a desk with a view of lush greenery outside, preferably with west-facing windows to enjoy beautiful sunsets at the end of the day.

Q: What advice would you give someone aspiring to get in touch with their artistic side?

A: I believe that every budding artist needs some alone time away from work, stress, and the hustle of everyday life. Personal experiences have taught me that trying art and even

experiencing failure is not wrong, but giving up is. Embrace the journey and keep exploring your creative side.

We hope this article has given you a closer look into the artistic world of Natasha Simonian. Stay tuned for more insights and stories from our talented featured artists. Join us in supporting their work and celebrating the rich cultural heritage they bring to Tatik Streetwear.
