I have always been so thankful that I was named Sose, and I know it sounds cheesy because of course I given this name before I could have any input, but, I just know it was the name I was MEANT to have. Growing up and hearing the ‘Sose Mayrig’ song, and learning about who she was and what she did, made it THAT much more impactful and inspiring (for me) to be named after such a legacy.
Sose Vartanian — also known as Sose Mayrig / Սօսէ Մայրիկ, was one of the most outstanding and iconic (first female) Armenian Revolutionaries. She received her surname ‘Mayrig’ (mother) for her bravery and maternal care + concern for the Armenian Youth. She was a fedayee (freedom fighter) who took up arms along with her husband Aghbyur Serop to defend Armenia and the Armenian cause.
Since the attacks on Armenia on September 13, 2022 we have had many martyrs lose their lives protecting the homeland. Four of them specifically, were women. Anush Abetyan, Sussana Margaryan, Alisa Melkonyan and Irina Gasparyan took up arms to defend the homeland and were brutally murdered in attempting to do so. Their deaths struck a chord with me because of the inhumane manner of their deaths but also because they were all Mayrigs (Mothers). They embraced their inner ‘Sose Mayrig’ and will be remembered as heroes for defending the right for Armenians to live peacefully on their ancestral homeland.
Please remember their names.
